Welcome to The Ocean Straw, the new standard for reusable, sustainable straws.

Every year, millions of tons of plastic end up in the ocean. All that plastic degrades into tiny particles - micro plastics - that last forever and cause serious threat to ecosystems and human health. Thankfully, governments have started to act and across Europe, a single-use plastic ban came into effect in 2021. As a result, businesses need an alternative that is acceptable to consumers while doing good for the environment.

By offering reusable products made from sustainable substitutes to conventional plastics, we actively contribute to reducing waste and micro plastic pollution. Our mission extends beyond merely selling straws: we want to make them an experience for environmentally conscious people, encouraging their active participation in shaping a more sustainable future.

With a global distribution network, we are committed to making our straws available worldwide.

About Our Product

Our premium, reusable and ocean-friendly drinking straws are made in Spain. They are designed to fit into a circular economy: Reducing, reusing and recycling are key methods for circularity and saving the natural resources, ensuring that our actions today don't compromise the future.

. They are made entirely from a patented raw material developed in Finland, consisting of responsibly sourced, biodegradable biopolymers originating from plants and natural wood dust from industrial side streams. Existing plastic products’ extrusion machinery is used for production and this approach represents a sustainable alternative that eliminates the need for investments in new production lines.

. They have a natural look and feel. They are strong and resistant enough to withstand regular use without bending or breaking. They are reusable and dishwasher safe (up to 10 cycles). We actively promote their reusable nature so that people also conceive, perceive and use them as intended.

. They offer the convenience and functionality of conventional plastic straws with a crucial difference: They have no harmful impact on the ecosystems! Users can enjoy them without worrying about their environmental footprint.

. They represent a superior and safer alternative to paper straws. Paper straws tend to lose their strength significantly within just 30 minutes when exposed to liquids, and often contain organic fluorinated chemicals such as Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl (PFAs) used for coating. Our straws can be used for up to 24 hours without getting soggy (with temperature up to 40ºC. 2h with temperature > 70ºC). They do not contain PFAs as intentionally added substances.

. At the end of their life cycle, they can be recycled through industrial composting. The nutrient-rich compost produced can be used in agriculture to improve soil quality.

. In the unfortunate event of accidental exposure to nature, they will naturally break down on a molecular level into CO2, water and biomass: They revert to natural components without leaving behind permanent microplastics or other toxic residues. This biodegradation process occurs over a timeframe similar to that of tree leaves or wood.

Available in 3 colours: natural, black or red, they are suitable for a wide range of beverages, including hot and cold drinks, whether it's a refreshing smoothie, hot coffee or a classic soda.

Overall, our straws combine user-friendliness with environmental sustainability, making them a versatile and responsible choice across various settings.

FAQ

Questions and answers about The ocean straw
What are your straws made from?

Our straws are made of a patented raw material developed in Finland. The raw material's main components are sustainably sourced biodegradable biopolymers originating from plants and natural wood dust from industrial side streams.

How are your straws processed?

The straws are crafted from the raw material using advanced extrusion processing. Extrusion means that the raw material is melted and thereafter forced through a restricted opening or die to shape it into a straw.

Are the straws or their material treated with any kind of chemicals? Do they contain PFAs?

No. Neither the material nor the straws are treated with chemicals. They do not contain organic fluorinated chemicals such as PFAs as intentionally added substances.

What difference with PLA straws?

PLA straws are made from fermented starch of crops such as sugar cane and corn. The material used in our straws has been developed to replace PLA, as PLA does not biodegrade fast (30 to 80 years) and releases methane. Additionally, PLA straws fall short when used with hot drinks as PLA is not resistant to hot temperatures.

What difference with paper straws?

Paper straws are not reusable! They get soggy within 30 minutes when immersed in liquids, and can easily turn into mush. They can become a choking hazard for small children chewing them. Furthermore, they often contain glue which can break into microplastics, or other chemical substances like PFAs for coating.

Does bio-based mean biodegradable?

Bio-based refers to materials made from renewable biomass sources, such as plants. Biodegradability is a chemical process in which microorganisms break down materials into natural substances like water, CO2, and biomass. However, being bio-based does not necessarily mean a material is biodegradable. Biodegradability depends on the chemical structure of the material rather than its resource basis. While a 100% bio-based material may not necessarily biodegrade, a 100% fossil-based material could under the right conditions. The claim of bio-based only pertains to the origin of a material, not its properties.

Are compostable products biodegradable?

Yes, compostable products are biodegradable, but not all biodegradable products meet the criteria for compostability. Composting is a biodegradation process that takes place under controlled conditions, including temperature, humidity, and aeration. Compostable products can decompose much faster than biodegradable products which rely on environmental conditions for degradation. Unlike compostable products, some biodegradable materials may leave behind residues or by-products that can be harmful to the environment.

Home-composting vs industrial composting?

Both forms of composting create a nutrient-rich compost, only they achieve it in different ways. Home-composting typically takes longer to break down organic matter because the conditions are less controlled compared to industrial facilities. Additionally, certain types of kitchen waste, such as meat and fish, may not be suitable for home-composting due to their potential to attract pests and vermin. Industrial composting, on the other hand, is a carefully managed process that optimizes decomposition and ensures rapid biodegradation.

Do industrially compostable products decrease the quality of the compost?

Materials that are certified industrially compostable under European standard EN 13432 undergo rigorous testing. According to this standard, these materials must disintegrate within 12 weeks and completely biodegrade within six months, with 90% or more converting to CO2. Any remaining biomass must be non-toxic and free from heavy metals. So, not only do industrially compostable products help reduce waste, but they also contribute to high-quality compost without harmful residues. It's a win-win for sustainability and the environment!

How well do your straws perform?

Our straws offer the convenience and functionality of conventional plastic straws but with a crucial difference as they have no harmful impact on the ecosystems. They are strong and resistant enough to withstand regular use without bending or breaking: They are suitable for up to 24 hours (maximum temperature of liquid 40°C; 2 hours with temp. > 70°C). They are reusable and dishwasher safe for up to 10 cycles.

What drinks can I use with your straws?

Our straws are suitable for a wide range of beverages, including hot and cold drinks, whether it's a refreshing smoothie, hot coffee or a classic soda. The 6mm diameter models are best suited for soft drinks, while 8mm and 10mm sizes are ideal for smoothies and milkshakes.

What sizes and diameters do you offer?

We offer three diameters: 6mm, 8mm, and 10mm. Standard lengths are 150mm and 200mm. If you need a custom length (230mm or 260mm), please contact us.
