Our Journey
The Challenge
Our world is grappling with the proliferation of microplastics, which pose serious threats to human health, the food chain, and ecosystems. Meanwhile, the significant carbon footprint generated across the entire plastic life cycle - from production to disposal - is accelerating climate change.
Providers of single-use plastic straws fail to address these critical issues, and their products contribute to pollution and increase the carbon footprint.
Our Solution
Introducing our line of premium sustainable drinking straws, a pioneering solution in the market. The Ocean Straw is made entirely from a sustainably sourced, wood and plant-based material and biodegrades without leaving behind permanent microplastics or other harmful residues.
Mother Earth is our manufacturing partner. Derived directly from nature, our products naturally revert to natural elements (CO₂, water, and biomass), helping to reduce waste and minimize environmental impact.
We are dedicated to keeping our planet safe and transforming the way we consume and dispose, one Ocean Straw at a time.
Our straws are made entirely from a fully biodegradable, sustainably sourced wood and plant-based material from Finland – a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics that biodegrades faster than PLA. No additives are used, except for our black and red straws, which are colored. In this case, we add a biodegradable, food-contact-approved ink which has properties similar to the material and is harmless to the composting process (Sicoversal® B Masterbatch, certified compostable according to EN 13432).
Our straws are produced in Spain via extrusion. Our manufacturing partner is an ISO 9001-certified factory renowned for its expertise in extrusion processing. In this process, the material is melted and pushed through a die to form the straw. Existing plastic machinery is repurposed, a sustainable approach that reduces the need for investment in new equipment.
Yes. Our straws are designed for multiple uses. They can be washed in the dishwasher up to 10 times at 60 °C without deformation or loss of structural integrity (dishwasher resistance tested according to EU standards EN 12875-1 and EN 12875-2, covering mechanical dishwashing resistance and inspection criteria applicable to domestic, industrial, and catering settings). In addition, our straws have successfully passed food-contact migration testing for repeated use (EN 1186-3), in accordance with EU Regulation 10/2011, ensuring that no substances migrate into food or drink, even with repeated use.
One Ocean Straw can replace up to 10 single-use straws, helping not only to save money but also to reduce waste and resource consumption.
Yes. The Ocean Straw is strong enough and suitable for hot beverages such as coffee and tea, as long as it is used for its intended purpose - sipping your drink.
Sustainability refers to products and practices that consider their entire life cycle, from material sourcing to production, use, and end-of-life management, with the goal of minimizing environmental impact, conserving resources, and supporting social responsibility. Being “eco-friendly” often focuses only on one aspect, such as using recyclable materials or reducing energy during production, but does not guarantee a holistic approach across the entire life cycle.
The Ocean Straw is a truly sustainable product, from sourcing to end of life, not just in isolated eco-friendly features.
- It is made entirely from a fully biodegradable, wood and plant-based material, with lower CO₂ emissions than conventional plastics like PP - even if incinerated at end of life.
- Each component is sourced according to a strict sustainability policy. The wood used is a by-product recycled from the wood industry, originating from sustainably managed forests in Northern Europe.
- It is reusable and helps reduce waste, microplastic pollution, and resource consumption.
- Both the material and the straws are produced in the EU, minimizing transportation CO₂ emissions.
- It is certified for industrial composting (organic recycling), ensuring that the full life cycle is considered.
- It leaves behind no permanent microplastics or other harmful residues - it is safe for people and the planet.
Yes, our straws are certified for industrial composting according to EU Standard EN 13432 and can be organically recycled in industrial composting facilities. Because they are suitable for industrial composting, the recommended disposal method is with organic waste. In countries or regions without an organic waste stream or industrial composting infrastructure, or where certified industrially compostable products are not yet accepted with organic waste, the straws should be disposed of with residual waste. In any case, the material can be recognized using Near Infrared (NIR) technology, so the straws can be properly sorted in recycling facilities for appropriate processing. If incinerated, they will produce lower CO₂ emissions than conventional plastics such as PP.
Yes, our straws are biodegradable because they are compostable (a compostable product is always biodegradable). Our straws have undergone rigorous testing for the EN 13432 certification, demonstrating that they can be digested by naturally occurring organisms, such as bacteria or fungi, and converted into CO₂, water, and biomass (the definition of biodegradability).
Industrial compostability is biodegradability in a controlled environment (heat, humidity, microbial activity), where the biodegradation process occurs faster (maximum 6 months to be certified). If our straws unfortunately find their way into nature, the biodegradation process will vary depending on natural conditions - but because the material we use has been designed to mimic nature, the timeframe will be similar to that of a tree leaf or a piece of natural wood, leaving behind no harmful residues.
The material has been tested according to ASTM D6691, showing 75.5% relative biodegradation in 420 days in a simulated marine environment with natural sea water - and according to OPPTS 850.1010 and OECD 202 for Daphnia Magna plankton toxicity, demonstrating that the degradation products are non-toxic and have no harmful effects on plankton in the marine ecosystem.
Yes, unlike conventional plastics, our straws will biodegrade without leaving behind permanent microplastics or other harmful residues. This is demonstrated by third-party testing, showing that both the straws and their material can be digested by naturally occurring organisms and converted into CO₂, water, and biomass.
No. No PFAs are used in our straws, not in the material either! PFAs, also known as forever chemicals, are often used in food-contact products, such as paper straws, for coatings. These chemicals are highly persistent in the environment and the human body, where they can accumulate over time. Exposure to PFAs has been linked to potential health risks, including hormonal disruption, immune system effects, and certain cancers, which is why avoiding them in food-contact products is important. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR, EU Regulation 2025/40) sets strict limits on PFAS in food‑contact packaging, effectively preventing their intentional use above very low thresholds in the EU market.
Please, see in "Are they compostable?"
Paper straws are single-use items and dissolve in liquid after 30 minutes - they do not offer an optimal drinking experience. They may contain PFAs for coating or synthetic glue to keep their shape, which can break down into microplastics. The Ocean Straw does not dissolve in liquids and can be used for 24 hours without getting soggy. It does not release unwanted substances into drinks, can be washed in the dishwasher, and can be reused multiple times.
PLA straws are bio-based but sensitive to heat - they are not designed for multiple use. Both PLA (the material) and PLA straws are often produced in China (like PHA straws, also bio-based), which raises concerns about sustainability practices, sourcing, and transportation-related carbon footprint. Additionally, PLA may take decades to biodegrade in nature, making PLA straws less sustainable than they may appear.
