We are honored to collaborate with

two of the most respected organizations in the bar and restaurant industry,

uniting passion, expertise, & sustainability

The Norwegian Bartender Association

Bartender.no – Norway’s Bartender Association, fostering a thriving community of professionals dedicated to excellence in hospitality.

It all began quietly on an autumn day in 1949...

...specifically, on October 6th, at the renowned venue Regnbuen. Eight bartenders gathered and founded our association under the name Oslo Bartender Club.

The association’s first president was Arne Normann.

In 1952, the association became a member of the International Bartenders Association (IBA).

Swedish

Bartenders Guild

SBG.nu – Swedish Bartenders’ Guild, bringing together industry leaders across Scandinavia.

(SBG) The Swedish Bartenders’ Guild has a unique history.

The Swedish Bartenders’ Guild (Sveriges Bartenders Gille) was founded on August 17, 1949. The founding meeting took place at the home of Helmer Jansson on Öregrundsgatan 4 in Stockholm.

In attendance, alongside Helmer Jansson, were Patrik Melin, Erik Olsson, Arne Gustafsson, Georg Wistedt, Gunnar Johannesson, Sixten Sigstelius, and Nils Bergström.

These individuals established SBG with the aim of uniting the bartenders working in Sweden at the time, as well as those employed on ships in Swedish traffic with other countries.

The same year SBG was founded, initial discussions began in Paris about creating an international organization. On February 24, 1951, SBG, together with six other guilds, officially formed The International Bartenders Association (IBA).

Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to our FAQs section, your go-to resource for all your questions about our products.
Browse through our frequently asked questions below to find the answers you need.

What are your straws made from?

Our straws are made from an innovative wood and plant-based material from Finland, that has been developed to serve as a sustainable alternative to conventional plastics, and to replace PLA (Polylactic Acid, also made from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane) due to its fast biodegradation.

How are your straws produced?

Our straws are produced in Spain using extrusion processing, a highly efficient manufacturing method that enhances productivity and minimizes waste. This process is renowned for its ability to reduce energy consumption and optimize material use, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and responsible resource management. Existing plastic extrusion machinery is used, which represents a sustainable alternative that eliminates the need for investments in new production lines.

Are your straws reusable?

Yes, our straws are reusable and they can be washed in a dishwasher up to 10 times at 60°C. Each Ocean Straw is equivalent to 10 disposable straws, helping to reduce waste generation while offering long-term cost savings. This makes them an excellent choice for environmentally-conscious people who prioritize sustainability.

Can I use your straws with hot beverages?

Yes, our straws are suitable for all types of beverages, including hot and cold drinks, whether it's a refreshing smoothie, hot coffee or a classic soda. They can handle hot beverages for up to 24 hours at temperatures up to 40°C (2 hours with temperatures > 70°C) while maintaining their shape and integrity. Designed for durability, they are strong and resistant enough to withstand regular use without bending or breaking. They offer the convenience and functionality of conventional plastic straws without posing a risk to ecosystems.

What makes The Ocean Straw a sustainable product?

The Ocean Straw is made of responsibly sourced, renewable and biodegradable materials. Designed to fit into a circular economy, they help reduce waste and the reliance on single-use products. When recycled, they close the loop and help reduce environmental impact.

Are they compostable?

Yes. Our straws are made from a material certified as industrially compostable according to EU standard EN 13432. This certification is applicable to all products made from this material with a maximum thickness of 270 microns, including our straws. This means that our straws can be organically recycled in composting facilities. The resulting nutrient-rich compost can be used in agriculture to improve soil quality.

Are they biodegradable?

Yes, as a compostable product, our straws are biodegradable. They break down into CO₂, water, and biomass, reverting to natural components without leaving behind permanent microplastics or other toxic residues. In a composting facility, the biodegradation process will take no longer than 6 months, while in natural environments, the time frame is similar to that of tree leaves (75,5% relative biodegradation of the material in 420 days - test ASTM D6691 in simulated marine environment using natural sea water).

How should I dispose of The Ocean Straw?

The preferred disposal method for our straws is industrial composting. They can be disposed of in bio-waste bins alongside other organic waste, for collection and processing in industrial composting facilities (organic recycling).

Do your straws contain PFAs?

Our straws do not contain PFAs (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as "forever chemicals") as intentionally added substances, which are often used for coating. They also do not contain glue that could break down into microplastics. Additionally, they are free from common food allergens.

Compared with paper straws?

Unlike The Ocean Straw, paper straws are single-use. They are often unpopular with bartenders and the HoReCa industry due to several drawbacks that impact both customer experience and practicality. Paper straws tend to become soggy and disintegrate after just 30 minutes when immersed in liquids. Additionally, they can pose potential health risks due to chemicals like PFAs and adhesives used in their production. Moreover, paper straws can easily turn into a choking hazard for small children who may chew on them. In contrast, The Ocean Straw offers a safer, more sustainable alternative, with superior durability and a longer lifespan.

Compared with PLA straws?

PLA straws, also made from renewable resources, are not ideal for hot drinks due to their temperature sensitivity. They can become soft or deform at temperatures higher than 40°C. Additionally, PLA straws are single-use and not designed for reusability, making them less sustainable in the long term. One of the main environmental concerns with PLA straws is their biodegradability: Often marketed as biodegradable, they can persist for several decades when disposed of in nature, which can contribute to microplastic pollution. The Ocean Straw is a more versatile and sustainable option due to its durability, reusability, and fast biodegradation.

What sizes and colors are available?

Our straws come in two standard diameters (6mm and 8mm) and two lengths (150mm and 200mm). They are available in natural wood or black color.

Are custom options available?

Yes, we can offer custom options, including straws with a 10mm diameter and lengths of 230mm or 260mm. We can also provide other color options such as red or blue, as well as paper wrapping and custom printing on the paper. Please contact us for more details on customization options.

What is the shelf life of The Ocean Straw?

The Ocean Straw has a shelf life of 24 months when stored in its original packaging, kept at room temperature (around 23°C), and protected from sunlight and humidity.
